a small note about mom friends

images9.jpg Just a PSA about Mom friends. I am a big fan of babies so I’m happy to see my Mom friends with their tiny nuggets, but what has never gotten easier for me is when they breastfeed in front of me and don’t cover up. Then I have to pretend the wallpaper is really interesting or whip my head 180 degrees away from the nursing scene, as if something really riveting is in the, I don’t know, the AIR. It’s like, I love you, but I don’t need to see your boobs, you know? Thank you.

  1. I feel the same way Tin. I’ve been trying to figure out how to manage that situation myself since I’ll be a nursing mom soonish. I have some very La Leche friends that have zero problems with the publicity. I 100% believe in nursing but I’m totally tossing a shawl over my kid’s head.

  2. oh good, i’m glad i didn’t offend you, and i guess there’s a point where my inner hippie realizes she’s a puritan banker or something. i am told you get so detached from your body in a way when you breastfeed that your boobs no longer feel private so moms don’t care. if you find that happens to you, i will still be friends with you, i’ll just look away a lot during that time period. there are a lot of hip looking nursing blankets nowadays. and i think it’s different if it’s your house or your backyard as opposed to a restaurant, you know?

  3. As a guy who likes looking at breasts, my question is: When a lactating mom decides to whip it out and feed her kid in front of me, am I supposed to look away or is not improper to occasionally sneak a glance? Because if I were to whip out my privates in front of people like it’s no big thang, I would expect them to look.

Since I have no idea what etiquette demands, I too look away. But at the same time, I’m like, I didn’t ask you to take out your boob in front of me, and you didn’t tell me not to look. So what’s the story? Any moms out there wanna reply?
