This weekend, at the engagement party of my childhood friend Alex, I got to see a lot of people whom I haven’t seen since I was in junior high school. Her half sister Pam said, “The last time I saw you, you were 13. We were driving to Montauk and Christopher Reeves asked for directions, and you yelled out ‘I thought Superman could get home from anywhere’ from the back seat.”
Apparently, Reeves laughed. Yay! B/c what a little heel am I, considering what his fate turned out to be. Okay, that’s it. I promised my husband I wouldn’t keep telling this story, so there it is, to remind me years later when I forget.
(chorus 1)
I am, I am, I am Superman and I know what’s happening
I am, I am, I am Superman and I can do anything
You don’t really love that guy you make it with now do you
I know you don’t love that guy cause I can see right through you
(repeat chorus 1)
(chorus 2)
If you go a million miles away I’ll track you down girl
Trust me when I say I know the pathway to your heart
(repeat chorus 2)
(repeat chorus 1 3x)
REM from Life’s Rich Pageant
Nice. See, a true REM fan. This 25 year old girl lists Green as a great album, which is like the sellout album. I was like what about Murmur? Life’s Rich Pageant? It could be I’m just old.
Tina, we are old.
The great thing for us, though, is that everyone knows Korean women just get better with age. We get sassier, sleeker and smoother – so the world better watch out! Although I don’t really know how we could get any sassier than we already are, Miss Talk Back to Superman.
I know. This was an age when I did not speak to anyone, which is why I can’t remember this moment, nonetheless, I hope Becca is proud of me.
How funny! I never heard that story. I’m proud of you. See you always had that spark in you.
I want to say: “That’s really super, Supergirl!”
which is a quote and possibly song title from XTC’s all-time great summer album… skylarking… which I would pit against any rem, elo (ah! xanadu),omd, or other 3-initial band album from the 80’s for pure atmosphere.
and ukrainian girls, besides tripling their weight by 65 on a single potato a day (and oh yeah a fifth o vodka) stay pretty sassy.
kisses, kiki
Your Christopher Reeve moment was totally sassy. Way to go. I sat behind him at a U2 concert in 1987 and he was totally white-dude dancing the whole time and I couldn’t think of anything snarky or witty to say, so I tip my cap in admiration.
Everyone should have Murmur, Lifes Rich Pageant and Automatic For The People in their collections, no matter how over R.E.M. they are. Those are brilliant albums. And speaking of R.E.M., I was in the West Village last night and I walked past a car that was blaring “7 Chinese Bros.” (from Reckoning). How random!
i have a special place in my heart for omd, thanks for reminding me kiki.
as for tony, if you’re up for it, i htink i’m ready for my reintegration to rem, including automatic for the people. what else have they done?
